Thiruvasagam by Illayaraja

Getting released today. Yesterday, I had a chance to see this curtain raiser in SS. Rather would say that watching Illayaraja explain the details during its composition and recording in Budapest was a great experience.

Illayaraja claims that he was born to do this. Illayaraja was very direct in his speech and few times he was sort of struggling for the right words to explain his feelings. The programme included short
clippings on other music directors' speeches and his childhood friends also. AR Rahman, Bharathiraja, P Suseela to name a few. There was an incident the Maestro explained. He had written the notes
in such way that the words were different but their sounds were the same. In the beginning of the recording, it made the performers in the Orchestra feel that they were playing the same words again and again. He explains to them by singing the whole song (Hope I have understood the correct way how the Maestro explained)

This is why I miss Chennai badly. Chennai has so many things in arts and movies, nowadays that I feel like kicking myself to have shifted out of Chennai.

Best Picturizations

I have taken into account the extent to which the song has been picturized to explain the situation and the script. I have left out those songs which were expertly picturized but not sticking on to the story line. I might have left out some master pieces. Kindly bear the same for me.

Telegrams in tamil

Flash back:
I still remember when the service of sending tamil telegrams was introduced, my father insisted me to go and send a tamil telegram in tamil to one of my uncles. And there was a small queue of 10 people standing in line for the same. This was way back in 90's.

Cut and Action:
Due to lack of public support the tamil telegram service is being stopped.

I feel I too have not realized this. I too have neglected this service. Lot of questions are unanswered. Would I have felt better if I had utilized this?

Metti Ozhi or ...

Mr.Baasha would have liked Metti Ozhi himself and would have watched it. Little did he know that because of that serial his grand daughter is going to commit suicide(for not being allowed to see it). Read here

We are so helpless when something happens around you like this. My condolences to that family.

My all time favourites list in Tamil

Slowly this TFM is catching up. And I am a recent victim. So here we go. Following is my all time favourites list
(order varies depending upon the mood)

Pallavi illaamal paadugiraen (Uyire Unakaaga)

Its a very small song but an absolute melody with guitar and SPB's soothing voice
Nirpadhuvae nadapadhuvae(Bharati)
An excellent composition by Illayaraja and Ragavendhar's best. He sang the track of this song and after 7 months Illayaraja told him to sing the main track
Poongatrilae(Uyire)
Rahman is in his best in a percussion and violin. Check when you hear this next time
Vandha naal mudal(Paavamannippu)
The lyrics are so moving even today.
Unnai kaanaadha kannum(Idhaya Kamalam)
Thenpaandi cheemayilae(Nayagan)
Kannalae Kaadhal (Aathma)
Semparuthi poovae(Kadhal solla vandhaen)

Sujatha and Ilayaraja

In Vikatan(need to subscribe for this service), Sujatha speaks in detail about Illayaraja's work on Thiruvasagam. From his "kattradhum Petradhum" : Symphony is a wrong word since work done on Thiruvasagam is a musical work for orchestra and voices on a sacred theme.

Also, Kamal speaks about his home. You dont see an actor in this article. You see a man in his home. The pictures are so compelling. I left them out worrying about copyright issues. You have to buy a vikatan to see those

Review : Batman Begins

If you are thinking that you are going to watch Batman do whatever you have wished, you will be disappointed. You are not into a fantasy film but a more serious topic. This is the only thing that would be a disppointment for the batman fans. Otherwise this movie is excellent.

There are two important phases in this movie. The life of Bruce Wayne(Christian Bale) and the life of Wayne as Batman. The first phase explains what makes Wayne as Batman and how. Second phase for his stunts. The phase where the director has slipped or rather made a mistake is in the first phase. You generally dont like watching a cartoon character like batman, spiderman, phantom suffer in their lives and what you like most is to watch their stunts. Thats the whole reason why these characters were able to catch so much of fans and they still do. Hence most of the time in Batman Begins is being occupied by Wayne as a kid, and his sufferings and his transformation into Batman. Its this phase thats catches you and it remains so till the end of the film.

But to state that this is not an entertainer would be an understatement. This movie has some breath taking shots and stunts. And the scenes in which Wayne gets trained by Liam Neeson(Henri Ducard) particularly.

I was able to feel this difference in between Spiderman I and II also. The first part was excellent and its sequel partly gets moved on to Spiderman's personal life and his love with his girlfriend. I read some where that the second part was not welcomed as its predecessor by the kids. Same case here in Batman Begins.

I had a chance to see Batman and Robin immediately after Batman Begins and I felt Batman and Robin was a better entertainer. Thats what you want Batman to do!

Anniyan atlast!

Anniyan
After postponing his Anniyan twice, Shankar must be very anxious to see how his film is going to be received by the audience. Seems the censor has given the film a U. Read here.

I shifted recently to Hyderabad and have no clue whether tamil movies are released here. Have to check out.

With the songs being closer to disappointment shankar must be relying on his story line and his picturizations. Songs sure will be a treat to watch. Let me wait till I get a chance to see it. Now a days predictions disappoint you often.
